vic & ripoll, puigcerdà
a dear friend and i have recently taken to escaping from the now hot metropolis of barcelona to its charming smaller neighbors. namely, ones at a higher altitude.

-the well-preserved, gothic-oriented VIC is an important university city where we stumbled upon the saturday market, buying too much honey and sampling coca (sweat bread).

-RIPOLL, possibly the favorite, apparently has a strong history in iron-making. what is that called? ironsmithing? oops, auto-spell check says thats not a word. two rivers make a fork where the town nestles comfortably in a valley of emerald. the usage of iron in the city in contemporary constructions is impressive, from an amazing perspective-altering pedestrian bridge to public seating, to lamp posts.

-the further-flung PUIGCERDÀ sits high in a pyrenees valley staring straight at the french border, as if saying...this side's better. the town was surprisingly bustling, i imagine more-so in the winter when catalans get their ski on. the lake located atop the plateau in the city provided a nice place for strangely victorian-looking mansions to center themselves around.
