some research on how spanish cities typically expand led me to these 
interesting maps of mad & bcn during their respective expansion periods. 

although now mad clearly surpasses bcn in population (not necessarily density), these maps don't suggest such. 
you see a mad of spaces waiting to be filled in throughout later decades, whereas with bcn, the plan is constant.
it's not uncommon to exit the grid in mad and end up in a neighborhood of walled mansions and low-density-ness.
true, this breaks the monotony of bcn's cerdà plan...but it makes for a larger, more sprawled mad, whose metro in recent
years, has grown like a watered weed to reflect that.
