15.6.10

while recently digging through archives, i've once again unearthed my last project from college - -
a library of sorts. it was done in collaboration with kaitlyn pietras. the first post with final images can be found here!

the starting point for us was naval architecture and fantastical/historical maps of not only genova but of other european maritime capitals at the height of their commerce and conquest. we used the forms of coastlines and structural elements from ships to create a community library that responded to the unique site. the site given consisted of a small parcel of land at piazza level, then jumps up 3 stories to a flat plane (all amidst academic institutions). later, a professor would tell us that it looks like a stack of books in elevation. oops! happy mistake? or even a mistake? who can say.
we enjoyed the "what if" aspect of this project, as is evident through some fanciful process work.

we imagined a new system of retrieving and archiving books, something similar to a science fiction film. we wanted lush, jewel colors to reflect in the façades of the structure. we wanted activity from the ground up, giving every floor a life of its own. maybe we did end up making a cruise ship?
